Arrive at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh where our representative will meet you at the exit gate and transfer you to your hotel. Check in to your hotel and spend the rest of the evening exploring the town and finding your bearings.
This morning, after breakfast, proceed to visit Shanti Stupa, built by Japanese monks to promote world peace. This large hilltop stupa has brightly colored reliefs on its mid-levels and is topped by a spired white dome. Visit the eye-catching Sankar Gompa monastery and then visit Leh Palace, a dilapidated yet fascinating palace built in the Tibetan style that dominates the Leh skyline.
Today you will travel to Nubra Valley, popularly known as Dorma or ‘the valley of flowers’ via Khardungla Pass, one of the highest motorable roads in the world. On arrival, check in to your camp. Later in the afternoon, visit the Diskit Monastery and the giant statue of Maitreya Buddha, the tallest Buddha statue in Ladakh. Later, visit the white sand dunes at Hunder where you can enjoy a safari on the double humped bactrian camel. You will stay overnight in the Nubra Valley.
After breakfast, drive back to Leh. En route you will visit Khardung la Pass which is 39 kms away from Leh. Khardung-La which means ‘Pass of the Lower Castle,’ is a major caravan route from Leh to Kashgar in Central Asia and one of the highest motorable roads in the world. You will arrive in Leh later in the afternoon with the rest of the day free for you to indulge in some retail therapy.
Leave Leh for Alchi, a small village in the Indus Valley, 67 kms west of Leh. Abandoned centuries ago the gompa or monastery is known as Chos-kor or religious enclave and comprises of five temples. Enroute see the majestic Sangam confluence where two rivers meet and then drive up Magnetic Hill, a gravity defying hill located near Leh. The hill is alleged to have magnetic properties strong enough to pull cars uphill and force passing aircraft to increase their altitude in order to escape magnetic interference. Hall of Fame near Leh, a museum built and curated by the Indian Army in honour of its soldiers with a special exhibition on Ladhakhi culture and traditions. You will then proceed to Kali Mata Temple and Gurudwara Patthar Sahib, built by the lamas of Leh in 1517 deep in the Himalayas to commemorate the visit of Guru Nanak Dev. End your day with a visit to Spituk Monastery, a famous for its wide and varied collections of ancient masks, icons, antique arms and thangkas. You will return to Leh and stay overnight.
This morning, after breakfast, proceed to Pangong Tso, a lake that extends from India to Tibet. During winter, the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water. En route to Pangong lake you will visit Shey Palace, the 15th century summer palace and monastery of Leh’s royal family and the 800 year old gompa at Thiksey built on a hilltop and modeled on the famous Potala Palace in Lhasa. On your way to Pangong Lake, you will pass through the Chang la, a high mountain pass and the world’s 3rd highest motorable road. The name literally means “Pass towards the South” or “Pass in the South”. Arrive in Pangong and spend the rest of the day is at leisure.
This morning, after breakfast, drive around the Pangong Lake and don’t forget to click photos!! Continue to Leh. En route visit the Hemis Monastery, hidden in a gorge it is the largest and wealthiest gompa in Ladakh. Visit Stok Palace, the seat of the erstwhile king of leh, famous for its beautiful gardens and the spectacular views of the plains below. At present, the palace is open to visitors and presents a collection of royal attire, crown and other royal possessions.
